The sixth annual Medina Lake Barbeque Cook-off will be held Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, 2011, at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Lakehills.
Entry fee for all three meat categories is $85. Categories are beef brisket, half a chicken, and pork spare ribs (no baby-back or country-style ribs).
Cash prizes are $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place. Certificates will be award to the fourth- through 10th-place winners in each category.
A showmanship award will be presented to the booth that shows the most creativity and flair.
There's also chef's choice and jackpot pinto beans competitions. The winner of each of these contests will receive half of the entry fees from the respective contest and a first-place trophy. There will be certificates for second- through 10th-place winners.
Since the cook-off will be held on the Thousand Trails site, cooks will also need to pay Thousand Trails $20 for Friday night or $40 for Friday and Saturday night for a site. These sites all come with 30-amp electricity, water and a picnic table. The sites are located under many large trees. So this should be real nice. Arrival and set up can start Friday as early as 10 a.m.
Each team must supply all their own equipment: booth, canopies, tables, and chairs and cooks need to stay within the boundaries of their assigned space. Pretty much what other cook-offs require.
Some other guidelines:
- Barbeque cook-off is held rain or shine.
- Golf carts are allowed.
- Pets are allowed and must be on a leash at all times and be sure to clean up after Fido.
- It's a family-friendly atmosphere, please.
- Thousand Trails park rules apply.
The washer tournament will have a $15 entry per team and a cash prize. Brisket, beans and soda will be available for purchase.
Folks that come to watch the fun can enjoy brisket sandwiches and bowls of beans. Cost is a $1 each. Soda will also be available for purchase.
The cook-off will be open to spectators. Thousand Trials will charge $5 per vehicle for entry to the park for the public.
Proceeds from the cook-off will benefit the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Lakehills firefighters have been fielding two teams of cooks in the last couple of years.
The sanctioning organization is the Lone Star Barbecue Society.
